Team Reitwagen BMW rider Andrew Pitt rode hard, but sensibly, in the opening round of this year’s Superbike World Championship at Phillip Island today and gave him and the team their first points in the campaign. Considering that this is the first race for the team and that the bike is virtually standard, finishing in the points is a remarkable achievement, especially as the series is so competitive this year. Pitt suffered problems with his gearshifter in race one, which possibly led to some gearbox problems in race two but, despite that, he kept going and brought the bike home in both races. Andrew - Race 1: 15th, Race 2: 15th: “It probably doesn’t seem like much to the outside world but to get into the top fifteen is a big achievement. The team have worked so hard with the material we’ve got and I wanted to finish both races at the very least. To get some points is a bonus because I don’t think people understand just how standard our bike is at the moment. Of course, none of us are getting carried away, because there is a lot of work to do and a long journey ahead. We are just at the start, but this weekend has been very encouraging. In one of the races today, I ran a few laps together with Max (Biaggi) and Leon (Camier) and it was interesting because there were only a couple, of areas where they were better. If we can improve in these areas then we really could begin to surprise a few people. Overall, I think we should all be very pleased at what we have done this weekend and now look forward to making further improvements next time out.” Andreas Werth (Motorsports Director): “The results today are well deserved and a reward for all the hard work everybody has put in. Andrew showed his professionalism by staying out on the bike, when he could’ve pulled in, and giving us some championship points. Despite the problems, he was determined to bring the bike home in both races and that’s what he did. After this great experience, we’ll go back to the workshops and start preparing the bikes for the next round in Portimao. There is also some good news about Roland. He has left hospital and is on his way home. Once he arrives in Vienna, he will go straight to hospital and have an operation to repair the double fracture of his right collarbone. A plate or tube will be put in and, as long as all goes well, we expect him back on the bike in Portimao at the end of March.“ RESULTS Race 1: 1 91Haslam L.
