Duke has been at the forefront of top quality Motorsport productions for well over two decades now. As a result they have a massive back catalogue from the days when their offerings were videos as opposed to the more convenient DVD’s of today.Despite continuing to produce superb bang up-to-date offerings, they are gradually going through the thousands of top quality programmes from the past and transferring them to DVD. Latest in a long line of these is Fast Riding the Roberts Way from 1995.
Roberts is of course Kenny Roberts who burst onto the 500cc World Championship Grand Prix scene way back in 1978 and totally revolutionised the sport. Skills he had learnt while racing on the dirt track ovals of America allowed him to win from the start and take three World titles by using a new sliding style of bike control. But, it was not just the style that stunned his rivals; it was the total package of natural talent, physical fitness and dedication that set new standards not seen before in Europe.‘King’ Kenny dominated Grand Prix racing and remained a force to be reckoned with both on and off the track. When he quit actual racing, Roberts turned to team management and soon discovered a calm teaching style which allowed him to pass on the philosophy and techniques which had brought him so much success. In 1995, he opened his own training camp outside Barcelona in Spain to teach others under ideal conditions. This film gives an insight into the training techniques used, that not only major on riding, but also fitness, diet and mental attitude. The programme covers a group as they go through the intensive month-long course that gives them a skill level they could not have achieved otherwise. This film also features extensive interviews with Roberts, Randy Mamola and other instructors, offering viewers a unique insight into the Roberts’ formula for success. It may be dated in some respects, but it is 65 minutes of not only nostalgia, but it also very useful in understanding how a professional approach to all aspects of racing pays dividends. It goes without saying that the picture quality and insightful commentary is without fault.
A useful DVD that will help not only road racers, but any motorcycle competitor from any two-wheeled discipline improve their approach. Good value at £12.71.
